The Basics

What is Andar Bahar?

Andar Bahar (अंदर बाहर) is a traditional Indian card game that has been played in homes, streets, and informal gatherings across South India for generations. The name means "Inside Outside" in Hindi — Andar is the inside (left) pile, Bahar is the outside (right) pile.

The game is beautifully simple: a single card — the Joker card (also called the house card, middle card, or katti) — is placed face-up in the centre. Cards are then dealt alternately to Andar and Bahar until a card matching the Joker's rank appears. You bet on which side receives the match.

Andar Bahar originated in Bengaluru (Bangalore) in Karnataka, South India. It is known in Tamil as Mangatha or Ullae Veliyae, and as Katti in parts of Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. From its street roots, Andar Bahar became one of the most-searched and most-played casino card games in India and globally from approximately 2018 when major providers like Evolution Gaming introduced live dealer versions.

Joker = 9♦  ·  9♥ appears on Andar (4th card)  ·  Andar wins

🇮🇳
Why Andar Bahar is so popular in India: No other casino card game is as culturally familiar. Unlike Blackjack or Baccarat, Andar Bahar requires no foreign rules to learn — millions of Indians grew up playing it with family. Its online casino appearance from 2018 onwards simply digitised a game that most South Indian adults already knew by heart.

Step by Step

How to Play Andar Bahar — One Round

1
The Joker card is placed face-up in the centre
At the start of each round, one card is drawn and placed face-up between the two piles. This is the Joker card (or house card / katti). Its rank — 2 through Ace — is the rank that must be matched. The round ends only when a card of this rank appears on either side. The suit of the Joker card does not matter for the main bet.
2
Place your bet: Andar or Bahar
Before any cards are dealt to the piles, choose: Andar (the match will appear on the inside/left pile first) or Bahar (the match will appear on the outside/right pile first). In most casino versions, Andar pays 0.9:1 and Bahar pays 1:1 — this difference is explained in the next section.
3
Cards are dealt alternately until a match
The dealer alternates dealing cards one at a time — first to Andar, then to Bahar, then to Andar, and so on. Each card is placed face-up on its pile. After every card, the question is: does this card's rank match the Joker? If yes, the round ends immediately. If no, dealing continues.
4
Round ends when the matching rank appears
The moment a card of the same rank as the Joker is dealt to either pile, the round ends. Suit does not matter — only rank. A Joker of 9♦ is matched by any 9: 9♠, 9♥, 9♣, or another 9♦.
5
Win or lose — new round begins
If the match appeared on the side you bet on, you win. Andar win: receive your bet back plus 0.9× (bet ₹100, win ₹190 total). Bahar win: receive your bet back plus 1× (bet ₹100, win ₹200 total). The deck is reshuffled and a new Joker card drawn for the next round.

The Critical Difference

Why Andar Pays 0.9:1 and Bahar Pays 1:1

This is the most important thing to understand about Andar Bahar. The payout difference exists because Andar has a higher probability of winning.

The first card is always dealt to Andar. This means Andar can win on the very first card dealt — before Bahar has received a single card. Bahar cannot win until at least the second card is dealt. This head-start gives Andar approximately a 51.5% win probability vs Bahar's 48.5%.

To compensate, Andar pays 0.9:1 (90% of bet as profit) while Bahar pays 1:1 (100% of bet as profit). Despite winning less per win, Andar's higher frequency makes it the better long-term bet:

Andar
अंदर — Inside — Left pile
Win probability: ~51.5%
First card goes here — can win on deal #1
Pays 0.9:1
₹100 bet wins ₹90 (total back: ₹190)
HOUSE EDGE ~2.15%
Better bet
Bahar
बाहर — Outside — Right pile
Win probability: ~48.5%
Second card goes here — cannot win on deal #1
Pays 1:1
₹100 bet wins ₹100 (total back: ₹200)
HOUSE EDGE ~3%
Andar is always the better bet. Even though it pays less per win (0.9:1 vs 1:1), Andar's 51.5% win probability and 2.15% house edge make it approximately 28% cheaper to play than Bahar (3% edge) over the long run. Over 1,000 rounds at ₹100 per round: Andar costs ~₹2,150 in expected losses vs Bahar's ~₹3,000. Always bet Andar as your primary wager.

⚠️
Note on variant rules: Some versions (especially traditional/informal Indian games) always deal the first card to Andar regardless of Joker colour. Online casino versions (Evolution, Pragmatic Play) may use the Joker card's colour to determine which side gets the first deal — red Joker = Bahar gets first card, black Joker = Andar gets first card. In these versions, whichever side gets the first card has the 51.5% edge and pays 0.9:1. Always check the specific rules of the version you are playing.

Extra Bets

Side Bets — What's Available and What to Know

Online casino versions of Andar Bahar — particularly from Evolution Gaming and Pragmatic Play — offer a range of side bets. These can be placed in addition to the main Andar/Bahar bet and resolve on specific outcomes within the round.

Side bet guidance: The main Andar bet (2.15% house edge) is the best value in Andar Bahar. Most side bets carry a higher house edge than the main game. If you enjoy side bets, the 16–25 Cards Dealt side bet (~1.89% edge) is the most player-friendly option. First-card side bets (First 3, 1st Andar, 1st Bahar) have high house edges and should be avoided as regular bets.

History & Culture

Andar Bahar in India — Origins and Regional Names

Andar Bahar is one of the few casino games native to India — not imported from Europe or adapted from Chinese or American games. Its origins are traced to Bengaluru (Bangalore) in Karnataka, South India, where it was played informally in homes and community gatherings for generations.

The game is known by different names across India:

  • Andar Bahar (अंदर बाहर) — Hindi, most widely used name. Means "inside outside".
  • Katti (ಕತ್ತಿ) — Kannada informal name, popular in Karnataka. Refers to the central Joker card.
  • Mangatha (மங்கத) — Tamil name used in Tamil Nadu.
  • Ullae Veliyae (உள்ளே வெளியே) — Another Tamil name, literally "inside outside".
  • Maang Patta — Used in some parts of Maharashtra and Gujarat.

Online casinos — particularly European providers like Evolution Gaming and Pragmatic Play — began offering live dealer Andar Bahar tables from around 2018. The game's search volume on Google India grew dramatically from 2019 onwards, making "andar bahar rules" one of the highest-volume Indian casino game search terms today.

🀄
Andar Bahar vs Teen Patti: Both are popular Indian casino card games but they are structurally very different. Teen Patti is a 3-card game with multiple betting rounds — similar to Poker. Andar Bahar is a single-decision game with no ongoing betting — much simpler and faster. Many Indian players enjoy both: Teen Patti for its depth and social dimension, Andar Bahar for its speed and simplicity.

Playing Smart

Andar Bahar Tips

1
Always bet Andar as your primary bet
Andar has the lower house edge (2.15% vs ~3% for Bahar) and the higher win probability (51.5%). Although it pays 0.9:1 instead of 1:1, the math firmly favours Andar for consistent play. Over 1,000 rounds at the same stake, Andar saves you approximately ₹850 per ₹1,000 staked compared to Bahar.
2
Understand the "first card" rule in your version
In standard online casino versions (Evolution, Pragmatic), if the Joker is black, the first card goes to Andar; if red, it goes to Bahar. The side receiving the first card always has 51.5% probability and pays 0.9:1. Always identify which side received the first card — that is always the slightly better bet regardless of the colour convention used.
3
Rounds are fast — set a session budget before starting
Online Andar Bahar resolves a round every 10–20 seconds. At 4 rounds per minute and ₹100 per round, that's ₹400/minute in action. Over an hour: ₹24,000 in total bets. The house edge operates on total bets, not session duration. Set a session budget (maximum total bets you are willing to make) before starting — not a loss limit, but a total-action budget.
4
Ignore "pattern" tracking — every round is independent
Some live Andar Bahar tables display bead roads and history boards showing previous round results. Each round uses a freshly shuffled deck and a new Joker card. Previous results have zero influence on upcoming rounds. The probability is always ~51.5% Andar, ~48.5% Bahar regardless of recent history. Bead roads are entertainment only.
5
Use flat betting — consistent stake every round
Progressive systems (doubling after losses) do not change expected value in Andar Bahar — they only change variance and risk of ruin. Flat betting keeps your session predictable and prevents a losing streak from escalating into a catastrophic loss. Decide your per-round bet before starting and maintain it consistently.
